ReCharge Bikes – FAQs

General eBike Questions

What is an electric bike?

An electric bike (eBike) is a bicycle with an integrated electric motor that assists your pedalling. The motor provides power when you pedal, making it easier to ride up hills, travel longer distances, and enjoy cycling without excessive effort.

How fast can an electric bike go in the UK?

In the UK, most electric bikes are limited to 15.5 mph (25 km/h) with motor assistance. You can ride faster than this using your own pedalling, but the motor assistance will stop at that speed.

Do you need a licence to ride an eBike?

No. Standard UK electric bikes (EPAC compliant) do not require a licence, insurance, or road tax. You can ride them anywhere normal bicycles are permitted.

How far can an electric bike travel on one charge?

Most modern eBikes can travel between 30 and 80 miles per charge, depending on:

  • Battery size
  • Terrain
  • Rider weight
  • Assistance level used
  • Weather conditions

Some high-capacity batteries can exceed 100 miles.

How long does it take to charge an eBike battery?

Most eBike batteries charge in 3–6 hours depending on battery capacity and charger type.

What is the UK law associated with riding ebikes in public areas and roads in the UK?

In the UK, most electric bikes are classified as Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycles (EAPCs). If an eBike meets EAPC regulations it is treated the same as a normal bicycle in law.

To be legal for use on public roads and cycle paths in the UK, an eBike must:

      • Have a maximum continuous motor power of 250 watts
      • Provide motor assistance only when the rider is pedalling
      • Cut off motor assistance at 15.5 mph (25 km/h)

If the bike meets these requirements:

      • No driving licence is required
      • No insurance or road tax is required
      • The rider must be 14 years or older
      • The bike can be used on roads, cycle paths and permitted public routes

Why choose an ebike with a mid-drive motor compared to a hub drive?

Both hub-drive and mid-drive motors have advantages, but mid-drive motors are often preferred for challenging terrain and longer rides.

A mid-drive motor is located at the bike’s crank and powers the bike through the chain and gears. This provides several benefits:

      • Advantages of mid-drive motors:
      • Better performance on steep hills
      • More efficient use of the bike’s gear system
      • Improved weight distribution and balance
      • More natural riding feel
      • Often used on premium eBikes and electric mountain bikes

Hub-drive motors, located in the wheel hub, can still be an excellent option for:

      • Commuting
      • Flat terrain
      • Simpler and lower-cost eBike designs

Choosing the right system depends on the rider’s needs, terrain, and budget.

How long will a battery last?

Most modern eBike batteries last between 500 and 1,000 charge cycles.

For a typical rider this often equals 3 to 5 years of regular use before the battery capacity noticeably reduces.

Battery lifespan depends on several factors:

      • Frequency of charging
      • Storage conditions
      • Riding style
      • Terrain and assistance level used

Good battery care can help extend its life. This includes:

      • Avoiding full discharge
      • Storing the battery at moderate temperatures
      • Charging regularly rather than leaving it empty for long periods

When battery capacity eventually reduces, replacement batteries are usually available for most major eBike brands.

If an ebike looses battery power, can I still ride it?

Yes. An electric bike can still be ridden just like a normal bicycle if the battery runs out.

However, the bike may feel slightly heavier than a standard bicycle because of the motor and battery weight. Many riders still find it perfectly manageable, especially on flat terrain.

This means you can always continue your journey even if the battery becomes depleted.

What are ebike error codes and what do they mean?

Most modern eBikes include electronic systems that monitor the motor, battery, and sensors. When the system detects a fault it may display an error code on the handlebar display.

These error codes help technicians identify potential issues such as:

      • Battery communication problems
      • Motor faults
      • Sensor or wiring issues
      • Brake sensor activation
      • Speed sensor problems

Different motor systems (such as Bosch, Shimano, Yamaha or Bafang) each use their own error codes.

In many cases the issue may be minor, such as:

      • A loose cable
      • A magnet that has moved on the wheel
      • A temporary system fault

However, if an error code persists it is best to have the bike checked by a qualified eBike technician with diagnostic equipment.

At ReCharge Bikes we can carry out professional diagnostics and software updates to identify and resolve many eBike system issues.

      Expert Electric Bike FAQs

What torque should I look for in an electric bike motor?

Torque measures the rotational force produced by the motor, usually expressed in Newton metres (Nm). Higher torque helps the bike accelerate faster and climb hills more easily.

      Typical torque ranges are:

      • 40–50 Nm – good for flat commuting and leisure riding
      • 60–70 Nm – suitable for mixed terrain and moderate hills
      • 80–90 Nm or more – ideal for steep hills and mountain biking

For riders in hilly areas such as Calderdale and the Yorkshire Pennines, higher torque motors are often the best choice.

What is the difference between cadence sensors and torque sensors?

Electric bikes use sensors to detect pedalling and control motor assistance.

      Cadence sensors

      • Detect when the rider is pedalling
      • Provide assistance once the pedals start turning
      • Common on entry-level eBikes

      Torque sensors

      • Measure how hard the rider is pedalling
      • Adjust assistance smoothly and proportionally
      • Provide a more natural riding experience

Torque sensors are typically found on premium eBikes and mid-drive motor systems.

How many miles will an electric bike battery last?

Battery range depends on several factors, including:

      • Battery capacity (Wh)
      • Terrain
      • Rider weight
      • Assistance level
      • Wind conditions

      Typical ranges:

      • 400Wh battery: 30–50 miles
      • 500Wh battery: 40–70 miles
      • 625Wh battery: 50–90 miles

Using lower assistance levels can significantly increase range.

Can electric bike batteries be repaired or refurbished?

In some cases batteries can be reconditioned or refurbished, where the internal lithium cells are replaced.

However, many manufacturers recommend battery replacement through authorised suppliers to ensure safety and compatibility with the bike’s electronics.

Battery refurbishment should always be carried out by specialist technicians.

      Are electric bikes waterproof?

Electric bikes are designed to withstand normal riding conditions including rain and wet roads.

Motors, batteries and electronics are typically rated IPX4 or higher, meaning they are protected against water splashes.

      However:

      • High-pressure jet washing should be avoided
      • Electrical connectors should be kept clean and dry
      • Batteries should not be submerged in water

How much does it cost to charge an electric bike battery?

Charging an eBike battery is very inexpensive.

      For example:

      • A 500Wh battery equals 0.5 kWh
      • Average UK electricity cost ≈ 30p per kWh
      • So a full charge typically costs around 15p or less.

This makes electric bikes one of the most economical forms of transport available.

      How heavy are electric bikes?

Most electric bikes weigh between 20 kg and 28 kg, depending on the frame type, motor system, and battery size.

      For comparison:

      • Standard bicycles: 10–15 kg
      • Electric hybrid bikes: 21–24 kg
      • Electric mountain bikes: 23–26 kg

Although heavier than normal bikes, the motor assistance offsets the extra weight while riding.

Can electric bikes be used for long-distance touring?

Yes. Many riders use electric bikes for long-distance touring and multi-day cycling trips.

Features that help with touring include:

      • Large capacity batteries
      • Efficient mid-drive motors
      • Comfortable upright riding position
      • Luggage racks and pannier systems

Some touring eBikes can achieve 100+ mile range with careful battery management.

Are electric bikes good for older riders or people returning to cycling?

Electric bikes are ideal for riders who want to enjoy cycling with less physical strain.

      Benefits include:

      • Easier hill climbing
      • Reduced joint strain
      • Adjustable assistance levels
      • Greater confidence on longer rides

Many riders find eBikes help them return to cycling after many years away.
